The Story of Ayesha Afroz’s Struggle for Survival

My name is Ayesha Afroz, and I am the daughter of Niaz Afroz. After completing my matriculation, I was married in 1995 at the age of 18. Over the years, I gave birth to three children: two daughters and one son. Sadly, my son passed away due to severe medical complications. After his death, my husband arranged for me to undergo a sterilization procedure without my consent, making it impossible for me to have any more children.

During our 18-year marriage, my husband repeatedly borrowed money from others and then disappeared, leaving me alone to face numerous difficulties with my daughters. To support my family, I began working in people's homes. During this period, I also completed five vocational courses to improve my ability to provide a better future for my daughters. I endured all these hardships solely for the sake of my young daughters and their future.

When my elder daughter was 17 and my younger daughter was 9, I finally decided to seek a divorce through khula and returned to my mother's home. Later, in 2013, my mother arranged my second marriage to Shahbaz Malik, a retired military officer. He already had three children of his own, but initially accepted my daughters. However, after only eight months, his true nature began to emerge. He started drinking alcohol and mistreating my children.

To protect my daughters, I sent them to live with their father's family. Some time later, my elder daughter got married, and she is now the mother of three children. She is currently 26 years old, while my younger daughter, who is now 19, is continuing her education. Sadly, my younger daughter refuses to meet me, although my elder daughter secretly remains in contact with me by phone.

Even after my daughters had been separated from me, Shahbaz Malik did not stop tormenting me. One night in Safora Goth, in the presence of his friend Imran and Imran's family, he brutally beat me from 10:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m. The assault left me in such a condition that I could neither stand nor move.

Finally, on 23 September 2018, Shahbaz Malik signed and stamped the legal divorce documents and divorced me. I was admitted to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Karachi with severe injuries, where I remained under treatment for ten days. Medical examinations revealed that my spinal cord had sustained permanent damage. I remained bedridden for three years and became completely dependent on others to meet even my most basic needs.

When my physical condition improved somewhat and I regained limited mobility, I legally registered my divorce and had my national identity card amended to reflect my father's name. After that, I sought assistance from various organizations in Karachi. However, wherever I went, including Ayan Senior Home, I felt suffocated and unsafe.

At one point, I even attempted suicide, but perhaps Allah Almighty had other plans for my life. Constant loneliness, emotional distress, and traumatic experiences had broken me from within. As a result, I withdrew from social interactions, stopped engaging with people, and became isolated from society.

On 26 June 2022, I travelled by road to Muridke, a city in Punjab, to attend a programme with Shahbaz Malik's children. Exhausted by the long journey and suffering from severe leg pain, I received an injection of diclofenac simply to make myself physically capable of walking and moving around. However, in Shahbaz Malik's house, I was treated as little more than a domestic servant. I cooked meals, cleaned the house, washed clothes, and ironed them.

One night, Shahbaz Malik returned home drunk and began mistreating me again. When I reminded him that we were already divorced and that I was staying there only because of my helpless circumstances, he physically assaulted me once again and threw me out of the house.

I had only one set of clothes and a small bag with me. I left the house helpless and had nowhere to go. I prayed to Allah Almighty for guidance and assistance. I knew that I could no longer return to that cruel man, but my own family had also abandoned me.

While wandering alone, I eventually reached Sector G-11 in Islamabad, where a kind-hearted family gave me shelter for ten days. However, eventually, they too asked me to leave. I then reached Rawalpindi Railway Station and began thinking about returning to Karachi. Yet, I was afraid that my family would refuse to accept me again.

At the railway station, I met a woman from Sargodha. She noticed my distress and helplessness and told me about Hawa Shelter Home, operated by Star Welfare Organization. I immediately searched for the organization on the internet and contacted Khidmatgar Baba. He guided me to seek assistance from Dar-ul-Aman in Shamsabad, Rawalpindi, as well as another shelter home in Rawalpindi. However, after careful consideration, I decided to travel to Sargodha.

I am now in Sargodha, where I have submitted my written statement. I need accommodation, food, clothing, and legal assistance. It has been seven years since I last saw my daughters, and I deeply long for the opportunity to meet them again.

Due to prolonged mental stress and traumatic experiences, my voice has become weak and trembling. I can now barely speak. Despite all the suffering and hardships I have endured, I have only two wishes: I want justice, and I want the opportunity to reunite with my children.

After staying at Hawa Shelter Home for some time, Ayesha Afroz eventually returned to her parents' home.
